Local and foreign dignitaries attend the grand opening of the
Complex
January 30, 1994 was the
Grand and Formal Opening of
the new Adelaide and Frances
Memorial Complex for the Elderly,
a
charitable organization owned and manage by local
businessman Mr. Augustus Justin.
The extension of the home is a welcome addition since
comfortable and modern facilities
for the
elderly is still a rarity in
St. Lucia today. The design of the building creates a homely comfortable and
friendly atmosphere.
Mindful
of the need for special care for the elderly, the design pays special attention and provides
facilities that
take into
consideration, degrees
of feebleness, infirmity and mobility of the elderly. It
encourages social contact
but at the
same time seeks to
preserve individual privacy.
The present home consists of single and double bedrooms, kitchen and laundry facilities, large
verandah and
communal living and dining
rooms.
The Home consist of many more rooms for the residents. It accommodates very large verandahs for
fresh air and
exercise, terraces, an
Atrium, social areas, TV rooms and a chapel. An attractive
covered walkway links the two
buildings.
Special attention is paid to the design of stairs which are built to accommodate wheel chairs. The
corridors are
very wide with hand rails
on either side as well as very wide doors designed so that in
cases of emergency a
stretcher can be comfortably accommodated.
Much
attention is paid to fire hazards. Thus, fire exits and extinguishers are strategically placed.
